This little coprolite specimen is from the Triassic flood plains that once occupied what is now the badlands of New Mexico. Notice the grooves on the surface? Those are claw marks. So why are their claw marks on poop? It could be that the animal deficated while in the water and accidentally kicked it with their claws while swimming away. My favorite scenario is behavior similar to that made by dogs after they deposit a stinky. Have you ever seen a dog kicking up the grass with their back legs right after dropping their load? Now picture a Triassic carnivore kicking back this little nugget while doing the same.
